about
Mustard return with their first recorded output since the day of the major Christchurch Earthquake. Their last release ‘Pocket Full Of Rain’ came out on 22 Feb 2011. They sold out of copies made and called it quits.. Sort of.
A return to the live scene last year at the Nelson Winter Music Festival rekindled the energy and passion. “Hey, should we record something? Ive got all this studio stuff that’s not getting used and it cost money.” Said guitarist Rich Densem.
“Yeah, sounds good,” replied drummer Daz Veale and bass guitarist Kris Spiers.
With enthusiasm, the band set up the equipment in Spiers North New Brighton home. They like recording mostly live so squeezed into the bach sized lounge. “We have a recording budget of zero, we have some good quality instruments and a bit of recording kit. With the style of music we play, it is important to get the energy on tape. It’s quite simple really. Push record, play well.” Says Densem. “It was a lot harder to get the overdubs and mixing done. Oh ive just got to walk the dog, hang on the baby is asleep, shit im tired from work, who’s playing first five? is game of thrones on tonight?”
Eventually ‘Luck at lotto’ appeared as a complete song. A sprightly tune with a surf rhythm, pulsing bass and despairingly hopefull lyrics. Three men, six mics, drums, bass, guitar, keys, a computer, and an old reel to reel.
